Getting to Know You: Entry 7

I know we normally do this on Tuesday, but I’m on vacation this week so we’re allowed to do things a little backwards. If you’ve been waiting on a response from me, no worries–I’ll be getting back with you soon!  🙂

Last week I was going crazy. I cleaned my entire house. The. Entire. House. All the dishes were washed, clothes were washed, folded and put away, floors were vacuumed, bathrooms were cleaned, even the shower and tub got a good scrubbing. I didn’t go to bed until 3 a.m. the night before we left for Florida. Because I literally can’t go on vacation while my house is a mess.

Am I the only one who does this? I sort of feel like I am.

Part of the reason I make sure my house is clean is kind of really morbid. What if I die while I’m gone? The last thing I want people to find when they open up the door to my house is a huge mess. I can just hear them now at my funeral, “She was such a great lady, but a terrible housekeeper!!” “You should have seen her baseboards. They were AWFUL.” Wait…they probably would still say that. I never clean my baseboards. Because when you have two cats and a dog there is literally no point. #canttouchthis

The real reason I go through all that trouble though is because I am worth absolutely nothing when I come back from vacation. I don’t want to cook. I don’t want to unpack. And I CERTAINLY don’t want to deal with leftover laundry and dishes. I can relax so much more while I’m away knowing that I will return to a sparkling clean house and I don’t have to do anything but walk in the door and put my things away when I get home.

Side note: I always unpack and put away everything as soon as I get home. I can’t stand “living out of a suitcase”, or whatever they call it.

Wow, my neat freak is showing. I need to cover that up.

Do you clean your house before you go on vacation? Why or why not?

Getting to Know You: Entry 6

Over the weekend, Madison from Wetherills Say I Do did a fun post telling her readers little things about her that they wouldn’t know unless they met her in person. I really enjoyed reading her post so I decided to do something similar for today’s episode of Getting to Know You.

1.       I love making lists.

There is a list of things I want to do in our new city posted on the fridge. There is a to-do list sitting right beside me of things I need to accomplish at work today. There is a blogging list. There is a meal plan list. There is a grocery list. I just really love lists, okay???!? I love that feeling of crossing things off a long list and physically seeing everything that I just accomplished.

2.       I have an unhealthy obsession with Chapstick.

Seriously the worst feeling in the world to me is chapped lips. So I will always forever and always and forever have Chapstick with me and if you spend more than an hour with me you’ll probably see me put it on at least once. When asked the question “if you were deserted on an island and could only take one thing with you” my answer is Chapstick. Chapstick always wins. I know……it’s a problem.

3.       I have to blow off every DVD/CD before I insert it into a player/car/computer.

This one is weird. I agree with you on that. But no matter what, I will always get the disc out of the case, blow on it, and then insert it into whatever I’m putting it in. I think it’s because I want to make sure there isn’t any dirt or dust hiding on it that might make it skip. I don’t know. I’ve been doing it for as long as I remember and nothing you tell me will ever make me stop. Trust me, Roman has laughed at me and teased me and tried his hardest to stop this little quirk. It won’t ever work. #cantstopwontstop

Okay, now I’ve bared all my secrets to you guys. But now it’s your turn!

Tell me something about you that I would only know if we met in real-life. Anything that people tease you about? Don’t hold back, we’re friends here!  😉

P.S. Have you entered the giveaway yet? Click >HERE< if you haven’t!

Getting to Know You: Entry 5 [Roman]

Cliffs of Moher, County Clare, Ireland

Sarah isn’t posting today, so I figured I would return to Sarah’s Getting to Know You series and answer a few, random questions about myself.

1. What is your favorite healthy snack?

I’d like to say Oreos, but I guess that’s not very healthy. So I will say a good trail mix. I prefer one with less than 50% peanuts. Let’s admit it, they’re not the best part anyways.

2. What season is your favorite and why?

I am a hot-natured person so I love cooler weather. Even though I like the colors fall brings, I prefer the lush greenery of spring.

3. If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go?

I would like to visit Ireland. The cliffs. The old architecture. The hills. I just love the landscape.

4. What is one thing on your bucket list?

A road trip from the east coast to the west coast. Just Sarah, myself and Duke. No plans. Just drive.

5. Are you an introvert, extrovert or somewhere in between?

I’m more of an extrovert. I like talking to people. Meeting new people is always fun.

6. Are you named after anyone?

Well, you know that soap opera that has been running for FIVE DECADES? Yes, I am named after Roman Brady from Days of Our Lives. My mother and maternal grandmother used to watch the show quite often and they liked the actor and the name, so there ya go.

More interesting, and way cooler, is the history of my middle name. To keep it short, and much less complicated: My paternal step-great-great grandfather was Warren Shaler. My paternal grandfather, my dad and myself all share his last name as our middle name, Shaler. So the name goes back five generations.

There you have it. A few random questions about myself. I hope you are having a wonderful Tuesday.

With love,

Getting to Know You: Fall Favorites

This week I’m co-hosting The Fall Welcome Week with Jenna from A Savory Feast.

If you missed it, yesterday’s post had TWO giveaways! Click –>HERE<– to go enter.  🙂

Don’t get me wrong, I love summer. But once it hits August, I grow tired of frizzy hair and instant sweating each time I step outside. I start to stare longingly at my scarves hanging in the corner of my closet and my sweaters neatly folded on the shelf. At first I felt pretty silly wishing for Fall when it’s still September. I mean, let’s get real here, some years it doesn’t start feeling like Fall in the South until like, Christmas. And sometimes not even then. Surprisingly though, the temperature dipped down to a really nice number over the weekend and then again yesterday. So maybe it’s not so silly to celebrate Fall this week after all?

Either way, today seems like an awesome day to get lost in Pinterest-land and share some of my favorite things about Fall. I created a brand new board, so if you’d like to follow me there and see what I’m dreaming of this Fall, the link to it is right here. I’ll be pinning to this board all throughout the week…..and probably much longer than that.  😉

In the meantime, here are some of my Fall Favorites:

Fall Favorites

1. Who doesn’t love a good Fall Wreath? I’m planning to set some time aside soon to try my hands at something like this. Can’t wait!

2. Boots ‘n Scarves. By far my most favorite thing about cooler weather is getting to wear my boots and scarves again! I’m definitely going to be on the hunt for a chunky infinity scarf like this one!

3. All things gold. I’m on a gold kick right now. I like gold jewelry, gold paint, gold shoes….you get the picture. So obviously, this picture just speaks to me. #givemeallthingsgold

4. Mason everything. I have SO MANY mason jars that have accumulated around my house. How cute is this? I may give it a try as well!

5. Fall colors. I can’t leave out this one! {See what I did there? Ha.} Even though it doesn’t last long, I love seeing all the pretty colors as nature fades from summertime to fall. I could stare at pictures like this for hours. So beautiful!!!

What are some of your Fall Favorites? Have you been getting lost on Pinterest like me? I want to see what you’ve been Pinning! Feel free to link up to your Fall Pinterest board or to a specific Pin you love. And don’t forget to enter the giveaways

Currently// Vol.1 (for me)

Writing: I’m really trying to get back in the habit of journaling. I’ve been so convicted lately on my lack of a quiet time with the Lord, and so I’m trying to re-dedicate myself to that time. I always love journaling during my quiet time because it gives me a chance to record things that I’m going through and things that I feel like the Lord is speaking to me. It’s always so fun to look back in my old journals and see everything He’s done over the years!

Anticipating: A vacation. Y’all, I need one so bad. So if anyone would like to give me a week on the beach for free, that’d be great. Thanks.

Wearing: I am in love with these shirts I just bought from Old Navy. They are really thin, so it’s great for this hot weather. But they fit me well and go with just about anything, so I may or may not be over-wearing them as I try to survive these final summer days. Dear Fall, bring on the cooler weather and some scarves, please!!

Craving: Chocolate of all kinds. I’ve been trying hard to eat right and workout as I work towards my You Can, We Can goals….but staying dedicated to my “no junk-food” rule is hard. Really hard.

Missing: My family and friends. We had Roman’s parents and some of our friends up for the Labor Day weekend, and now that they are gone I am reminded of how much I miss all of our family and friends. I haven’t seen my parents in almost a month (!!!) and there are many of our friends that we haven’t seen since we left Camilla. I miss everyone! Perhaps a weekend back at home will be coming soon….

What’s been going on in your life lately? Anyone else ready to bring out the fall clothes??

Today I’m linking up with Jenna from Dearest Love and Anne from Anne in Residence. Head on over to their blogs to participate and read some other great posts!

Getting to Know You: Entry 4 {A Blog Hop}

Yes, I know. I am doing a “Getting to Know You” post on a Friday instead of Tuesday. Which means there won’t be a Five-Minute Friday post. And we didn’t have a Wifey Wednesday post this week either. What in the world is going on? But hey, I make the rules around here which also means I can break them too!  😉

About three week ago my friend Krissy from Reclaimed Spaces hosted a blog hop and featured me as one of her must-read blogs. Eeeek! So today I’d like to pass the love forward and do the same! First I’ll answer some questions about me and my blog, and then at the end I’ll introduce you to three of my friends whose blogs I adore. Let’s get started, shall we?

Q: What am I writing now?

This post. Sorry, I couldn’t help it. No really, I’ve got quite a few ideas swirling around my head right now. {Maybe a giveaway in the near future? Or a linkup party hosted by me? Who knows!!}  And I’ve just started working on a super-secret collaboration with a bunch of other bloggy-friends that I cannot wait to tell you guys about next week. (Yay!!)

Q: How does my work differ from others of its genre?

Gosh, this is a tough one to answer for me. In some ways I would say that my blog is very similar to others of its genre, but then at the same time it is different. It’s different because it’s written by me…and it’s my unique words and thoughts and experiences that make it what it is. I’m definitely not confining myself to write on only certain topics in only a certain style…being a “lifestyle blogger” affords me that opportunity! Also, I think I use smiley faces way too much.  🙂  #cantstopwontstop #sorrynotsorry

I think the biggest thing I’ve had to learn is to just be me. I tried writing like other popular bloggers and I tried sticking to a rigid outline (ex: only ____ amount of words per post) and it just never worked. I almost quit blogging entirely because I didn’t love it anymore. I’ve had to learn that my words matter. MYwords. Not words that I’ve recycled from somewhere else. Not words that I think would sound better than what the Lord has placed on my heart. Just. My. Words. And that’s pretty freeing!!

Q: Why do I write what I do?

It’s funny how all of this got started. My first few blog posts were all about me and Roman and our lives. It was more of a scrapbook than anything. There were tons of pictures and silliness to boot. After I wrote this post two months into blogging and it got over 200 page views in one week (which was a lot for my usual 20-page-views-per-post), things started to shift. I realized that if I really wanted to use my words to touch others, I could. I realized that people wanted more than just cute pictures of dogs and vacation photos…although there was nothing wrong with that. I quickly decided that I wanted my blog to be more than a documentation of my life!

I still share lots of things about my life….I mean, hello? Did you see my post yesterday?? But there is a whole lot more than that now….from faith, to finance, to marriage, to infertility. Our mission here is to share our lives with you. All of it. And hopefully through that transparency and through the sharing of what God is doing in our lives, we can be an encouragement for you and point you to Jesus.

Q: How does my writing process work?

Honestly, there isn’t really a process. I just write. Sometimes I’ll write one phrase that has really been on my heart and construct a post around it, but normally I just start writing. Many times I’ll have an idea strike me at random times during the day and I’ll just start writing about it. Or if I don’t have time to write, I’ll type down a few thoughts into my phone and finish the post later.

I will say that over the two months I have created an actual blogging schedule and that has made a huge difference. I’m still free to move things around as I like, but I have several posts already written and queued up. It also helps me spread out my different topics more evenly so that I’m not talking about the same thing over and over. Except the last two weeks I’ve been talking a lot about community so I guess I shouldn’t have said what I just said. Oops. Having a blog schedule has been something that several people have encouraged me to try before, but I’m a stubborn procrastinator and kept putting it off. I’m so glad I finally listened though….having a schedule has changed my life, y’all.

And now, it’s time for me to introduce you to three new blogs that I love right now!

Meiko Seymour

Getting to know you-Meiko

Oh gosh, what can I say about Meiko? I absolutely love him and his wife! They were the first friends we made when we moved here to Columbus and the four of us have gotten really close really fast. Just about every weekend here lately has been filled with trips to the Market, staying up too late, and really deep conversations. But I don’t love Meiko’s blog just because he is my friend! His mission is to “connect, encourage, & help grow people in meaningful ways so that they can fully operate & live fulfilled.” And I really feel like he fulfills his mission with each post that he writes! In addition to writing his blog, he also has launched a ministry called [bracket aims] where he partners with organizations to offer direction and consultation so that you can move forward with your core values and vision. Seriously you guys, you need to check out his blog!

Ali Smith

I met Ali through the Community Brew linkup earlier this week. She linked up with her post “Are you willing to be persecuted?” and I absolutely loved it. It’s a ridiculously scary question to ask ourselves, but I think our answer reveals a lot about how committed we are to following Christ. It’s for sure a call to love Him deeper and run after Him harder! I have really enjoyed reading over some of Ali’s other posts and look forward to reading more. Her passion in sharing Jesus through her life and her writing is so inspiring to me as a fellow writer, and I know it will be inspiring to you as well. So go check her out!

Faith Golden

I met Faith through a Facebook group called The Peony Project. (A space for women who love Jesus, blogging & community. If you fit these three, you should join us! It’s an awesome group!!!) She and I love a lot of things in common….Pride & Prejudice….Michael Buble….fur babies (that would be our dogs, FYI.) Right now she’s hosting an event called “Bloggers on Marriage” and it is so great! I really love the most recent guest-post written about the “little things” in marriage. I’m so glad that I was able to meet Faith through The Peony Project, she’s a really great person to get to know…I hope you guys will click over and show her blog some love!

What are some of your favorite blogs that you are reading right now? Let me know in the comments, I love discovering new blogs!

Getting to Know You: Entry 3 {Testimony Link-up}

Today, we are incorporating our Getting to Know You series with a link-up by Jenna at Dearest Love. Click the graphic below to read her testimony and to check out some other testimonies by bloggers all across the globe!

Dearest Love

I have always been a Christian. Or, at least, I’ve always associated myself with Christianity. At just five years old, I remember sitting criss-cross applesauce on my bed while my Dad explained what it meant to accept Jesus into your heart.  I remember him telling me that when you ask Jesus into your heart, it’s like He puts you in His hand and closes it up around you, and because God is so big and strong nothing could ever take you out. He balled up his hand into a fist and told me to try to pry open his fingers. I couldn’t.

Granted, the only reason I had asked about accepting Jesus was because my best friend had been baptized that morning at church and I was jealous. But in that moment, I remember my dad’s explanation and I remember my tiny little child-heart saying, “yes, I want to be safe in God’s hands!” And so I repeated the prayer of salvation after my dad and then I got to be baptized in the tiny pool inside the church (yay!!)….which was not nearly as much fun as it looked because someone put too much hot water which made it scolding hot….but that’s a story for another day.

Ever since the age of five, my relationship with God has been one of right and wrong. I have to do X, Y and Z so that I can be a good little obedient Christian girl who makes Jesus smile with pride. I can’t do A, B or C because then I’ll make Him sad. And NO ONE wants to make Jesus sad. Well, not in South Georgia anyways. (joking) I believe I repeated that prayer of salvation at least a hundred times throughout my childhood….just. in. case. Because what if I didn’t mean it enough the first time? What if that’s why I keep messing up over and over again? What if I made God really really mad that last time I sinned and I needed to fix things between us again? Baptists call it “rededicating your life” and I think I did at least once a month.

Entering my high school days, my spiritual walk was a series of intense failures, followed by prolonged wandering, followed by emotional repenting, followed by extreme devotion. Rinse, wash, repeat. My senior year was the year that I finally let go of any spiritual walk that I had left. I wandered far, far away for ten long months. It was a perfect picture of the prodigal son, as I eventually came back home with my tail tucked between my legs and my heart ripped to pieces. But even still, as I slowly re-built my broken relationship with Jesus and learned what it meant to be secure in my walk with Him, there was one major thing that was missing: intimacy.

Even as I was baptized in the Holy Spirit…..there was no intimacy.

Even as I led worship for our small church…..there was no intimacy.

Even as I started blogging and journaling and learning…..there was no intimacy.

There was a whole lot of obedience. A whole lot of devotion. A whole lot of loyalty. But the large gaping space reserved for intimacy was left empty and deserted. My times of wandering grew fewer, but I was not captivated by Jesus like I’d heard so many others talk about. It has taken two long years of infertility and heartache to bring me to the end of myself. I reached a point where I had to unlearn everything I thought I knew about God and actually dig in deep and learn the Truth about God. And what did I find?

It’s only been in the past month that I’ve stepped into intimacy with the Father. It’s only been in the past month that I’ve learned what it means to sit in the quiet and commune with the Spirit of God. It’s only been in the past month that I’ve worshipped harder and more genuine than ever before. It’s only been in the past month that I’ve truly embraced His grace and forgiveness. And truly, truly, things have never. been. so. good. I never knew what I was missing! I only knew that living by rules day in and day out just because He says to makes for one very tiring walk with Jesus.

Intimacy. It has meant everything to this woman who was raised in the church, yet still didn’t really know Him. He’s writing a new story in me, and I can’t wait to see it unfold and share it with all of you!

But for now, let’s take a moment to reflect on our walk with Jesus and see how far we’ve come. What has He been doing in your life? Can you pinpoint events that have caused you to turn and see Him? Feel free to share in the comments!!

Getting to Know You: Entry 2

Last week we started a new series that will run every Tuesday until I feel like we shouldn’t do it anymore. That’s clear enough, right?? It started when I realized that we have a lot of new readers that probably don’t know us like our other readers do that have been around since the start of this blog (hi mom, hi!) So every Tuesday, we’ll do a short post and answer a question or two or five and then it’ll be your turn to answer in the comment section. By the end of the series, we’ll practically be best friends, right? Right???

Today’s question is: What are you most looking forward to in the next 12 months?

I am really just looking forward to seeing what God has in store for us and our family. I don’t want to jinx anything, but I have a feeling that our struggle with infertility will not last for much longer. Plus, now that we’re starting to get settled in Columbus, I feel like God is going to start laying out some of His plan for us while we are here. I’m excited to see what He has in store for us and I can’t wait to move into the “mommy club.”

On top of that, it’s exciting to look at our debt payoff plan and realize that in just six months we will almost be debt-free! Wahoo!!! Well, assuming we don’t have to buy a new car. Ahem.

Roman’s answer is best formatted as a dialogue…..

Me: What do you most look forward to in the next twelve months?

Roman: Hopefully starting our family.

Me: I thought you’d say something different.

Roman: Like what?

Me: Getting your braces off.

Roman: HOLY COW. That’s a good one! But I look forward to starting our family more.

Alright, so now it’s your turn….

What are you most looking forward to in the next 12 months? Leave a comment and let us know!

Getting to Know You: Entry 1

I was thinking on the way home last night and I realized that I have a lot of new readers that probably don’t know me all that well. This blog started off with only my close family and friends reading it (hi mom, hi!) but it has grown so much larger than that. So I figured a getting-to-know-you series was perfectly in order. Every Tuesday, we’ll do a short post and answer some cool questions and then you can answer those same questions in the comment section. By the end of the series, we’ll practically be best friends, right? Right???
